Salesforce Org Security in 2026: Risks and Remedies for CIOs
The Salesforce ecosystem has never been more critical – or more exposed. In late 2025, a cybercrime group exploited a third-party integration to siphon data from 700+ Salesforce customer orgs (including brands like Google, Coca-Cola, and Cisco) without breaking Salesforce itself. This supply-chain breach underscored a new reality: the biggest threats to your Salesforce org come from how you use and extend the platform – misconfigurations, human error, over-scoped integrations – rather than weaknesses in Salesforce’s core. At the same time, Dreamforce ’25 showcased Salesforce’s push into AI-driven automation (Agentforce), which promises incredible productivity gains if you can govern it safely.
Bottom line: Salesforce’s platform remains extremely secure out-of-the-box, but the way we connect and customize our orgs in 2026 has radically increased the stakes. Below, we break down the five biggest security risks facing Salesforce orgs in 2026 and how to mitigate each one effectively.
1. Over-Permissive Access (Too Much Access Everywhere)
Many orgs are still grappling with excessive user and app permissions. Profiles that grant far more access than needed, permission sets that pile up over years, and “temporary” privileges that quietly become permanent are common. Under pressure to deliver features quickly, admins sometimes default to broad permissions – and security debt piles up
. The result is an environment where a single compromised account (or rogue integration) can access way more data than it should. In the era of AI, this is even riskier: an autonomous agent running under an over-privileged user could wreak havoc across your CRM.
Salesforce itself is nudging customers towards least privilege. In fact, Salesforce planned to phase out profile-based permissions by Spring ’26 in favor of a permission-set model
(this change has been postponed, but the direction is clear). The best practice now is to start every user with a bare-minimum profile and layer on access via permission sets – no more “super user” profiles by default. As one expert notes, using the “Minimum Access – Salesforce” profile as a baseline and granting additional rights only through specific Permission Sets eliminates the accidental “superpowers” users often get with old-school profiles. This modular, least-privilege approach limits the damage any one account (or agent) can do.
Mitigation:
Adopt a “minimum access + permission sets” model for all users: Assign each user the lowest-privilege profile (e.g. Minimum Access) and grant additional permissions solely via role-based Permission Sets. This ensures no one has excess rights by default.
Regularly audit and revoke excessive permissions: Run reports on users with powerful perms like “Modify All Data” or “View All” on sensitive objects – and remove anything not justified. Commit to a quarterly access review to prevent privilege creep.
Use Permission Set Groups and Muting: Group permission sets by job function and mute any unnecessary perms within those groups. This makes it easier to manage roles without falling back on broad profiles.
Expire temporary access: If you must grant elevated access (e.g. to a contractor or for a special project), use Salesforce’s new Permission Set Assignment Expiration feature to automatically remove those rights after a set time. No more “let’s leave it just in case” – the access will disappear on schedule.
Treat apps like users: Apply least-privilege to integrations and connected apps as well. Give each integration a dedicated, minimum-access profile and only the API permissions truly required. An OAuth app should never run as a full System Admin user.
2. Identity Attacks Outsmarting MFA (Phishing & Session Hijacking)
Thanks to Salesforce’s mandatory MFA push, straight-up password attacks are less of a concern today. Instead, attackers have shifted tactics to go around login protections – using phishing, token theft, and session hijacking to impersonate users who have already authenticated. And unfortunately, the rapid rise of generative AI is turbocharging these social engineering attacks.
AI-powered phishing has exploded: by the end of 2025, analysts observed a 1,265% surge in phishing attacks linked to generative AI tools. The FBI even issued an alert that criminals are using AI to craft highly targeted, perfectly worded phishing lures. Deepfake voices and videos now enable convincing scams (for example, a 2024 attack used an AI-generated video of a CFO to trick a finance team into a $25 million transfer). In short, attackers can impersonate your executives, partners, or Salesforce support with frightening accuracy. One well-placed phish can steal a user’s valid session token or OAuth refresh token – bypassing MFA and giving the attacker an open door into your org.
Compounding the issue, many orgs still have gaps in their identity layer. Perhaps Salesforce is MFA-enabled but some connected tools aren’t behind SSO, or IP allowlists and login hour restrictions are lax. Attackers take advantage of these weak links. A common ploy is to trick a user into authorizing a malicious connected app (OAuth phishing) or using a hijacked session cookie, which won’t trigger a login challenge. In 2025’s incidents, we saw hackers preferring stolen tokens over passwords – because tokens let them impersonate users directly, often without any alerts.
Mitigation:
Make identity your new perimeter: Enforce Single Sign-On (SSO) for all access to Salesforce and related apps, so you can centrally enforce MFA and security policies. Don’t allow users to log in with standalone passwords if you can help it.
Use phishing-resistant MFA and device trust: Where possible, implement modern authentication factors (like FIDO2 security keys or platform biometrics) that are harder to phish. Ensure that only managed, compliant devices can access Salesforce – e.g. via endpoint MFA prompts or a CASB – so a stolen token on an unknown device gets blocked.
Harden session security: Shrink session timeouts and token lifespans for high-privilege users and integration accounts. Require re-authentication for sensitive actions. This limits the window an attacker has if they do hijack a session.
Implement conditional access policies: Leverage IP ranges, geolocation, and anomaly detection. For example, block or challenge logins from unexpected countries or out-of-hours access for certain profiles. Many orgs underuse these settings configure them to raise the bar for attackers.
Security awareness in the AI era: Continue to train users to spot phishing and spoofing, but update your training with AI examples (e.g. hyper-realistic deepfake requests). Emphasize that any unsolicited “urgent” authorization request – whether via email, Slack, or phone – should be treated as suspicious. Users should know how to report and pause in doubt. (No training will stop all attacks, but educated users are a crucial line of defense.)
Monitor and alert on abnormal access: Use Salesforce event monitoring or Identity Verification features to detect unusual login patterns. For instance, multiple failed login attempts followed by a success, or a user account suddenly querying large data volumes, should trigger an immediate review. Integration with a SIEM can enrich these alerts. As the original playbook advises, define alerts for things like concurrent logins from different regions or mass data exports under one user.
3. Third-Party and OAuth Ecosystem Threats (Integration Supply Chain Risk)
Salesforce’s strength is its extensibility – the AppExchange apps, APIs, and integrations that connect your CRM to everything. But each of those connections is a potential supply chain vulnerability if not rigorously managed. We learned this the hard way in 2025: attackers compromised a popular sales tool’s integration and leveraged its OAuth token to pull data from hundreds of Salesforce orgs. By abusing a trusted connected app (with generous API scopes), they bypassed MFA and appeared as legitimate API traffic. Over 50 million customer records were stolen in that campaign – including contacts, cases, and even embedded secrets – making it one of the largest SaaS breaches on record.
Even smaller-scale third-party exposures can be devastating. Consider unmanaged browser extensions or desktop utilities: the community has seen incidents where a trojanized data loader tool or a malicious Chrome extension quietly exfiltrated Salesforce data. Likewise, “shadow IT” integrations (scripts, data dumps, unauthorized connectors) can become backdoors that fly under the radar. Every extra integration is essentially a privileged user that never sleeps, often with far less oversight than a human user. If an integration has no clear owner or business justification, consider removing it – unowned apps are a red flag in themselves.
Pre-authorize and strictly scope OAuth apps: Take advantage of Salesforce’s new connected app restrictions by installing and approving all needed third-party apps at the org level (so users aren’t individually approving random apps). When installing, review the OAuth scopes requested – limit any that are overly broad. For custom API clients, use OAuth policies to constrain IP ranges and data access.
Apply the Principle of Least Privilege to integrations: Every integration should use a dedicated integration user with only the minimal permissions and object access required. Avoid using a generic System Administrator account for API work. If using an API token, treat it like a password – store it securely, rotate it regularly, and never hard-code it in client-side apps.
Monitor integration activity aggressively: Make sure Salesforce’s event logs for API calls are feeding into your Security Operations tools. Set up alerts for abnormal integration behavior – e.g. a normally light-use integration suddenly exporting thousands of records, or an API client pulling data at odd hours. Modern tools (including Salesforce’s own Security Center) can flag unusual API usage or new connected apps automatically, especially when powered by AI. Use these to catch malicious activity early.
Audit and test third-party apps: Don’t blindly trust AppExchange or custom packages – conduct periodic security reviews. Check when the app was last updated and if the vendor has a good security track record. If possible, enable Salesforce’s “require user permission for Apex” setting to prevent packages from doing things users themselves couldn’t. For any app that connects out to external services, ensure it’s using HTTPS and proper encryption for data in transit.
Have an incident response plan for integrations: Treat a compromised integration like a lost device or insider threat. If you’re not leveraging these, you might be missing an easy win to tighten data security. Keep in mind, data protection isn’t just about hackers – it’s also about compliance. Regulations from GDPR to new U.S. state privacy laws and industry standards mean that lack of insight into where customer data resides can lead to fines and legal trouble, even if a breach never occurs.
Mitigation:
Classify your data (use Data Detect or similar tools): You can’t protect what you haven’t identified. Leverage Salesforce Shield’s Data Detect or third-party data classification tools to scan your org for sensitive data. Focus on finding PII (personal identifiers), financial info, health data, and any secrets (API keys, passwords) that may lurk in text fields or attachments. Maintain a data catalog that maps which objects/fields hold sensitive info and what level of protection each has.
Encrypt sensitive fields at rest: Enable Shield Platform Encryption for fields containing high-value data like social security numbers, bank account details, or secret tokens. This ensures that even if an attacker somehow exfiltrates your database or backups, the critical fields are ciphered. (Note: Platform Encryption is transparent to users with access, so it won’t stop an authenticated attacker, but it adds a layer of safety for certain breach scenarios and compliance.) Also consider encrypting data at the application level for especially sensitive pieces – for example, storing certain customer data only after encrypting it in your app, so Salesforce never sees the plaintext.
Lock down who can see what: Revisit your Org-Wide Defaults, sharing rules, and field-level security for key objects. Many orgs have overly liberal read access, meaning even if a user shouldn’t see a particular field’s data, they might because of a broad permission set or report. Apply field-level security to mask sensitive fields from all but the few roles that need them. Similarly, restrict export/report capabilities on objects loaded with PII – not every user who can view a record should be able to export all data in bulk.
Scan for secrets and purge them: If Data Detect or a code scanner finds secrets (passwords, API keys) stored in records, treat it as an incident. Get those credentials invalidated/rotated, and scrub them from the system. Educate users and developers that production credentials should never be stored in Salesforce records or code. If certain reference data (like integration endpoints or tokens) needs to be stored for business logic, use tools like Named Credentials or an external secrets manager rather than embedding them in custom objects.
Use DLP and monitor data egress: Implement Data Loss Prevention rules if you have an enterprise DLP solution – for example, flag or block emails that contain large dumps of Salesforce data or reports with lots of customer PII. On the Salesforce side, consider tools or AppExchange packages that can detect when users save or upload files containing sensitive info (like spreadsheets full of contacts) and either warn them or encrypt those files. Monitor unusual data export activities as mentioned earlier. If a user suddenly exports 10,000 records of contact data, someone should know.
Secure Slack and other integrations: If you’ve integrated Slack, Teams, or other collaboration tools with Salesforce, set clear policies for what kind of Salesforce data can be shared in chats. Leverage Slack’s integration that respects Salesforce record-level perms, and enable retention settings so that data in Slack channels isn’t kept longer than necessary. Train users not to share screenshots or CSV exports of Salesforce data in unsanctioned ways. The goal is to prevent the creation of “shadow” copies of Salesforce data that live outside the protected Salesforce environment.
5. AI Agents and Generative AI: The New Frontier of Risk
Salesforce’s big bet for 2026 is AI and the Agentic Enterprise – allowing AI copilots and autonomous agents (via Agentforce) to operate within CRM workflows. These AI-driven agents can take actions on your behalf, generate content, and even chain tasks together. The promise is huge, but it also introduces a completely new category of risks. Enforce least privilege for AI agents: Just as with human users, start with no permissions and add only what’s necessary. If an agent is meant to, say, draft renewal quotes, maybe it needs read access to Accounts and write access to a custom “Quote Draft” object – it does not need modify-all on Opportunities or access to cases. Use a dedicated integration user for the agent with a trimmed-down profile. And don’t reuse one agent’s creds for another; each agent or AI service should have its own identity.
